Clinical Analysis of a Surgically Acute Abdomen in Patients Over 65 Years Old

Abstract
An analysis was made of the medical records of 209 patients over 65 years old, who had had a surgically acute abdomen and underwent an emergent operation at the Department of Surgery, Presbyterian, Medical Center, Chonju, Korea fom March 1992 to
Februry
1995.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The sex distribution was 99 male and 110 female patients, a ratio of 1: 1.1
2) Among these patients the most frequent finding was acute appendicitis in 91 patients (43.5%).
3) Coexsistent diseases was found in 133 patients, cardiovascular diseases being the most frequent. Of these, the hypertension was the most common
4) 13 patients had found an surgical acute abdomen induced by malignant disease, Mechnical obstruction was in 6 patients, intestinal bleeding in 4, and intestinal perforation in 3.
5) Postoperative complications occurred in 113 patients. Pulmonary compications were most frequent. of these, the atelectasis was the most common.
6) The motailty rate was 6% and the leading cause of death was sepsis. the death rate causes by malignant disease was mush higher than that caused by other diseases (38.5%)
7) The preoperative physical status by ASA shows that as the class increased motality increased. There was a stastical significance between class II and class III
8) In a review between APACHE II scores and surgical mortality, APACHE II scores will help in the preliminary investigatioin of post-surgical prognosis. Pierson's relative coefficient value was between 0.60 and 0.87 (P value<0.05).
